Yoko Andersson Yamano & Masahiro Sambe / Longing for Grey

Vague Kobe presents Longing for Grey, an exhibition by glass artist Yoko Andersson Yamano and photographer Masahiro Sambe. The two artists have previously collaborated on projects such as Glass Tableware in Still Life, traversing the boundaries between material and perception to create new visual landscapes that merge glass, painting, and photography.

In Longing for Grey, the exhibition focuses on the individual expressions of Yamano and Sambe, envisioning a space where light, taste, scent, and memory gently converge. ‘Grey’ in the title evokes an ambiguous time drifting between black and white — the quiet expectancy of waiting for someone, the faint hope that arises in that moment, and the fleeting light that envelops the scene, revealing the delicate gradations that dissolve into glass.

Yamano’s 250 new glass works — including drinking glasses, jugs, and other tableware — gently change in expression as they catch the light.
On the other hand, Sambe’s photographs capture a delicate presence that shimmers between light and shadow, quietly moving between transparency and opacity, reality and memory.

Developed in collaboration with Stockholms Bränneri for this exhibition, Vague Kobe will also present and sell its first original craft gin, distilled with hojicha (roasted green tea), sansho (Japanese pepper), and elderflower. Featuring a label design based on a sketch by Yamano, the interplay of fragrance and taste allows the exhibition to extend beyond the visual, unfolding into a unified sensory experience.

Just as a cocktail harmonises distinct ingredients to create new aftertastes, glass, photography, gin, and space resonate together—bringing forth a gently diffused landscape of grey within Vague Kobe.

Vague Kobeでは、ガラス作家・山野アンダーソン陽子と写真家・三部正博による展覧会「Longing for Grey」を開催します。二人はこれまで、「Glass Tableware in Still Life」をはじめ、素材と視覚のあいだを行き来するプロジェクトを共に手がけ、ガラス・絵画・写真といった異なる領域を横断しながら、新しい風景を生み出してきました。

本展「Longing for Grey」では、 山野と三部それぞれの表現に焦点を当て、光・味・香り・記憶が交差する空間を構想しています。タイトルにある“grey”は、白と黒のあいだに漂う曖昧な時間、誰かを待つときに生まれるほのかな期待や希望、 その風景を包む一瞬の光やガラスの中に沈む濃淡を映し出しています。

山野による約250点の新作グラス――カップやジャグなどのテーブルウェアは、光を受けてゆるやかに表情を変えます。
一方、三部の写真は、光と影のあいだに揺らめく気配をとらえ、透明と不透明、現実と記憶のあいだを静かに往還します。

今回の展覧会に合わせて、Stockholms Bränneriとともに開発し、ほうじ茶・山椒・エルダーフラワーで蒸留したVagueオリジナルのクラフトジンを提供・販売します。ラベルデザインには山野によるスケッチを起用し、香りと味覚が加わることで、展示は視覚を越え、五感を通してひとつの体験へと広がります。

異なる材料を調和させて新しい余韻を生み出すように、ガラスと写真、ジンと空間が響き合いながら、Vague Kobeの中に、淡くにじむグレーの風景が立ち上がります。
