As we approach the final weekend of Ruth van Beek’s exhibition at Vague Kobe, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the journey that brought her artwork to our gallery walls. Our connection with Ruth traces back several years to a collaboration initiated by Teruhiro Yanagihara Studio (TYS) for a Creative Direction project for skincare brand D.W.M., where TYS appointed Ruth’s distinctive vision to breathe life into a series of captivating visuals and two mini art books. Delving into this creative partnership, we asked our Art Director at TYS, Maho Kameda, to unravel the allure of Ruth’s work.

‘I came across Ruth’s work right after I graduated from my Master’s degree and moved from London to Copenhagen. I was working at a design studio when I encountered Ruth’s series called ‘The Arrangement’. I vividly remember feeling a sense of timelessness within her contemporary work, as layers of colours and forms overlay old magazine clippings and archive photographs.

Looking at Ruth’s work evokes a range of emotions and memories—curiosity, humour, disquiet, awkwardness, unease, delightfulness at hidden possibilities, mystery, and bewilderment. In Ruth’s work, the colours and shapes of the archival clippings are given a new life, prompting questions, challenges, and also a desire for a ‘home’ that exists within us, which is abstract and universal. Perhaps I am drawn to her work because of her unbiased gaze toward these contradictory yet intertwined perspectives.

Several years ago, I had the opportunity to visit Ruth at her home and studio in the Netherlands while working on a project for D.W.M. It was then that I had a glimpse of the space where her creations come to life, and I thought it would be great if we could witness her artistic process in Japan too. Since then, our studio has moved from Osaka to Kobe and we have established a new ‘home’ for our creative output, Vague Kobe. It’s my dream to invite Ruth to stay at Vague Kobe as an artist-in-residence, plan a new exhibition, and create a new project book together.’ —Maho Kameda

VAGUE KOBEで開催している、Ruth van Beek（ルース・ファン・ビーク）の展覧会は最後の週末を迎えました。ルースとの関係性は、実は数年前に、Teruhiro Yanagihara Studio （TYS）がスキンケアブランドD.W.M.のクリエイティブ・ディレクションを手がけたときに、ルースに依頼してヴィジュアルアートやアートブックを一緒に制作したことから始まりました。このコラボレーションを実現させた、TYSのアートディレクター・Maho Kamedaに、ルースの作品に惹かれた理由をを伺いました。

「ルースを知ったのは大学院を卒業してロンドンからコペンハーゲンに引っ越してきてすぐくらいの頃でした。当時働いていたデザインスタジオでプロジェクトのリサーチをしていた際に、ルースの『The Arrangement』というシリーズに出会いました。使われている古い雑誌の切り抜きやアーカイブの写真に上書きするように新たな色やフォームのレイヤーが重なり合っている姿に、現代の作品であるのにどこか時代を逸脱した空気を感じたのを覚えています。

ルースの作品を見ていると、いろいろな感情や記憶が呼び起こされます。好奇心、ユーモア、不穏さ、ぎこちなさ、心許なさ、隠れた可能性への喜び、謎と困惑。ルースの作品の中で、切り取れられたアーカイブの色やかたちは新たな命を与えられ、問いかけます。それはチャレンジであり、自分の中に存在する抽象的かつ普遍的でもある「Home」への希求のようにも思えるのです。彼女の作品に惹かれるのはそうした相反しながらも混在するものたちへのフラットな視線を感じるからかもしれません。

数年前に、ルースと一緒にコラボレーションしていたD.W.M.のお仕事で、オランダにある彼女の自宅兼アトリエを訪れました。その際、彼女の創作が生まれる場所を垣間見ることができ、ぜひ日本でも彼女の作品が出来上がっていく過程を目撃できる機会をつくれたら、と思いました。それから時が経ち、私たちのスタジオも大阪から神戸に引っ越してVAGUE KOBEという新しいクリエイティビティの「Home」ができたので、ぜひルースにVAGUE KOBEにアーティスト・イン・レジデンシーとして滞在してもらいながら新たな展示を企画し、そのプロセスを紡いだプロジェクトブックを一緒に作れたら、というのが私の次の密かな夢です。」 —Maho Kameda
