Nicolas Trembley / French Mingei

Vague Kobe is delighted to present French Mingei, opening 7 November 2025. Curated by Nicolas Trembley, this exhibition presents French folk furniture and everyday objects from the late 19^th to 20^th century in dialogue with the spirit of Mingei. Drawn from Trembley’s collection in the South of France, these works embody functional beauty and artisanal knowledge passed down through generations.

Mingei is more than tradition; it is the living memory that binds communities. By bringing French vernacular objects into dialogue with Japanese philosophy, the exhibition invites us to reconsider how objects inhabit our lives — connecting gesture, use, and shared familiarity, and carrying traces of human continuity through material and time.

Trembley’s new publication Craft (After 8 Books, 2025) will also be presented for the first time at Vague. The book explores the evolving relationship between art, craft, and exhibition-making, and how objects and curatorial practices shape our understanding of everyday life and aesthetics. The works on view will also be available for purchase.

Vague Kobeでは、フランスを拠点に国際的に活動するキュレーター、ニコラス・トレンブリー（Nicolas Trembley）による展覧会「French Mingei」を開催します。

本展では、19世紀後半から20世紀にかけて南フランスでつくられ、トレンブリー自身が長年にわたり収集してきた生活道具や家具を紹介します。そこに息づくのは、日々の暮らしや地域の伝統に根ざした制作の姿勢、そして世代を超えて受け継がれてきた職人の知恵と機能美です。一方で、「民藝」は単なる伝統ではなく、共同体を結びつける生きた記憶でもあります。フランスの生活文化と日本の思想を重ね合わせることで、国や時代を超えて通じ合い、暮らしの文化に宿る価値を深く映し出します。

トレンブリーの新刊『Craft』（After 8 Books、2025）も、本展にて先行発売されます。本書は、アート、クラフト、展示の関係性の変遷をたどりながら、作品や展示空間、そしてキュレーションのあり方が、私たちの日常や美意識をどのように形づくっているのかを探ります。なお、展示作品はご購入いただくことも可能です。
