Nao Tsuda / LO −逆さまの杯と杖−

Vague Kobe is pleased to present LO – The Inverted Glass and the Cane, an exhibition by photographer Nao Tsuda.

For more than 15 years, Tsuda has repeatedly traveled through regions influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. Since ancient times, these areas have sustained their faith and traditions through a profound reverence for deities, the natural world, and a way of life closely aligned with harsh environments. Tsuda has continued to walk these lands, turning his gaze toward temples and monasteries, the monks who live there, and the religious festivals held within them. This journey, he says, began with a desire to witness the origins of Buddhism with his own eyes and to stand within that spiritual source.

On this occasion, invited by an anthropologist acquaintance, Tsuda travelled to Mustang, a remote region of Nepal where the Himalayas rise dramatically. Visiting the restricted Mustang area during winter, he presents for the first time his new photographic series “LO.” Winds sweeping across arid terrain, overlapping mountain ridgelines, stupas standing as if absorbed into the landscape, and layers of crystalline air unique to high altitudes—these scenes gathered during Tsuda’s journey quietly emerge within the space of Vague Kobe, coalescing into a single, contemplative landscape.

Centred on photographic works, the exhibition also features the installation LO – The Inverted Cup and Staff, composed using fragments Tsuda encountered and collected during his travels in Mustang. Layers of time accumulated in a land once traversed by people along salt trade routes rise into the space, resonating with the photographs and gently awakening the presence of distant landscapes. In addition, the exhibition includes richly toned platinum prints from Tsuda’s earlier REBORN series (photographed in the Kingdom of Bhutan), as well as printed works produced in collaboration with PAPIER LABO., incorporating specialised printing techniques.

Furthermore, the photo book LO (published by NEUTRAL COLORS in December 2025) will be presented and available for purchase at the venue. Unlike Tsuda’s previous photo books, this volume was created through a hand-crafted, multi-layered, multicolour process using risograph printing. Exposed to intense sunlight, sand, and wind, the land of Mustang is rendered with a tactile presence, allowing the viewer to physically sense its terrain.

Vague Kobeでは、写真家・津田直による展覧会「LO−逆さまの杯と杖−」を開催します。

津田はこれまで15年程前よりチベット仏教圏に通ってきました。古来より神仏や自然に対して畏敬の念を持ち、厳しい自然に寄り添うことで信仰や伝統が受け継がれてきた地域を歩き続けてきました。その中で、寺院や僧院、そこに暮らす僧侶や寺院で行われるお祭りなどに目を向けてきました。それは仏教の原点を自らの目で捉え、そこに立ちたいという思いから始まっているといいます。

今回、津田が文化人類学者の知り合いの誘いを受けて向かったのは、ヒマラヤ山脈が聳え立つネパールの奥地、ムスタン。
入域許可が必要なムスタン地方に冬の時期に訪れ、撮影した新シリーズ「LO」を初めて公開します。乾いた大地を吹き渡る風、山々の稜線が織りなす連なり、風景の中に溶け込むように佇む仏塔、そして標高の高い土地ならではの澄んだ空気の層——。津田が旅の中で掬い上げた光景が、Vague Kobeの空間で静かに姿を現し、ひとつの風景として立ち上がります。

写真作品を中心に、併せて津田がムスタンへの旅で出会い、手に取った欠片を用いて構成したインスタレーション「逆さまの杯と杖」を展示します。かつて塩を運ぶ道として人びとが往来した土地に蓄積された時間の層が、写真作品と呼応しながら空間に立ち現れ、遠い風景の気配をそっと呼び覚まします。
また、過去に「REBORN」シリーズ（ブータン王国にて撮影）で制作した階調豊かなプラチナプリント作品、特殊な印刷技術を取り入れ、PAPIER LABO.と共同制作した印刷物も展示いたします。

加えて、2025年12月に刊行した写真集『LO』（NEUTRAL COLORS刊）も会場にて紹介・販売します。これまでに津田が制作してきた写真集と異なり、リソグラフ印刷を用いて手作業により、版を重ね多色印刷して作られました。強い日差しを遮るものがなく、砂や風に晒されるムスタンの大地が、そこに手ざわりをもって感じられるような写真集になっています。
