Desert by Design / Book Launch

Vague Kobe is pleased to present Desert by Design, by Molly Mandell and James Burke.

To mark the occasion, Vague Kobe will host a special Mandell & Burke book launch and pop-up, alongside of a mezcal tasting. Please join us for a signing and on Saturday, February 28. Copies of Desert by Design will be available on site, alongside a curated selection of Mandell & Burke titles.

The desert—its sounds, smells, flora, fauna and the unique individuals who reside within it—is a landscape filled with equal parts mystery and beauty. Desert by Design provides a glimpse into the projects and lives of those who have chosen to call it home. These stories span continents, highlighting one-of-a-kind built environments everywhere from West Texas and Southern California to Mexico, Morocco, India and New Zealand.

Whether covering iconic properties inhabited by Yves Saint Laurent, César Manrique and Donald Judd or thoughtfully curated, centuries-old adobe structures and modern, groundbreaking ones, Desert by Design offers more than insight into architecture and interiors. It is a dynamic book that gives readers the opportunity to connect deeply with more than 30 other creatives—environmentalists, artists, architects and choreographers—and their values. With tips for cultivating the intimate and unpretentious environment that is synonymous with these arid landscapes no matter your location, the book is a celebration of this unique climate, its spaces and above all, its people.

Molly Mandell & James Burke | Molly Mandell and James Burke are arts and culture writers, photographers, and producers. Their work has appeared in the likes of Kinfolk, where Mandell was formerly an editor, Wallpaper*, Monocle, Vogue Mexico, and the Los Angeles Times. In 2018, Mandell and Burke authored their first book, Made in Cuba, and served as the editor and art director and the copy editor, respectively, for Nathan Williams’s The Eye.
Currently, they comprise the editorial team for the platform Creative Voyage and are the brains behind numerous events and itinerant hospitality projects across the globe. When not on the road, they reside in the artistic enclave of Marfa, Texas, where they are actively developing a cross-cultural, multidisciplinary residency program based in the Chihuahuan Desert and the land where Mexico and the United States meet.

Vague Kobeにて、Molly Mandell（モリー・マンデル） & James Burke（ジェームズ・バーク）による『Desert by Design』（2025年、Abrams）のブックローンチ＆ポップアップを開催します。会期中は、メキシコの蒸留酒・メスカルのテイスティングもご用意。2月28日（土）には著者によるサイン会を実施します。会場では書籍のほか、関連タイトルもご覧いただけます。

『Desert by Design』は、C.V.aの編集者モリー・マンデルとジェームズ・バークが執筆し、Studio8585がデザインを手がけた一冊。砂漠を住まいとして選んだ人々の暮らしや創作を紹介しています。西テキサスや南カリフォルニアから、メキシコ、モロッコ、インド、ニュージーランドまで世界を巡りながら、砂漠の魅力や知識を広く伝えています。

イヴ・サンローラン、セサル・マンリケ、ドナルド・ジャッドにゆかりのある住まいから、歴史あるアドベ建築、そして現代建築まで。本書は建築やインテリアにとどまらず、砂漠のスピリットを表現しています。30人以上のアーティストや建築家、環境保護活動家、コレオグラファーなどの価値観に触れながら、砂漠特有の親密で自然体な空間づくりのヒントも提示します。『Desert by Design』は、この特別な場所と、そこに暮らす人々への敬意を込めた一冊です。

また会期中には、砂漠の風土を感じる体験としてメスカルのテイスティングもご用意しています。メスカルとは、時間と土地を味わうお酒。乾いた大地に根を張り、10年以上かけて育つアガベを、地中で蒸し、石臼で砕き、自然発酵させ、小さな蒸留器で静かに仕上げます。その工程のひとつひとつに、土地の記憶と人々の手の痕跡が宿っています。ぜひこの機会にお試し下さい。

Molly Mandell & James Burke | アートやカルチャー分野を中心に活動するライター、フォトグラファー、プロデューサー。Mandellは『Kinfolk』の元エディターで、Wallpaper*、Monocleなど数多くの媒体に作品や寄稿を発表しています。現在はプラットフォーム「Creative Voyage」の編集チームとして活動するほか、世界各地でイベントや移動型ホスピタリティプロジェクトを企画・運営。メキシコとアメリカの国境に広がるチワワ砂漠を背景に、異文化・学際的なレジデンシープログラムの立ち上げにも取り組んでいます。
